THE PAINTING is a rare example of painting of the famous French sculptor Eugène Thivier. His most famous sculpture is the " Cauchemar " from 1894 , a now in the Muse´e des Augustins in Toulouse issued marble sculpture of a reclining woman who is attacked by a personified as a dragon nightmare.
Artworks by Thivier are rarities. There have been offered in the last 20 years about 4 sculptures only, as well as 4 paintings and two watercolors.
Born into a fmily where an artistic career was not welcome. However, he manages to become a sculptor while his brother, Emile Thivier (1858-1922), is an academic painter. In a neoclassical style, Eugène Thivier realized allegories of fortune and love. His most famous work, "The Nightmare," a white marble is displayed at the Musee des Augustins in Toulouse, France.
Eugène studied as a sculptor with Augustin-Alexandre Dumont, Loison and also with Dubray. He was a versatile talent, painting and drawing, and kept in close contact with his brother and the circle of the Impressionists. His bust of Sisley, now in the Museum of Moret -sur -Loing sets witness of these relationships.
